Derivation of Name
West Virginia was part of the state of Virginia until the civil war, when its inhabitants, loyal to the Union, formed a separate state after Virginia became part of the Confederacy.
Virginia's name probably came from Queen Elizabeth I of England, the Virgin Queen, or possibly from the name of a Native American community located near the original Virginia colony.
