Wildlife Sighting Possibilities in the USA and Canada

Introduction

The leaflets and newspapers issued by the parks give useful details of what wildlife can be sighted, and the best places for doing so.

However, it must be remembered that these are wild animals, so any sightings are very much subject to chance and must be regarded as a bonus.

Many wild animals are potentially extremely dangerous and the precautions advised by the park authorities should always be observed.

Feeding wild animals is very harmful to the animals and is always totally prohibited.

The following are just a few examples of places where wildlife can often be sighted - there are of course many, many more.

Bears (Black and Grizzly)

• Glacier National Park, Montana

• Great Smoky Mountains National Park, North Carolina and Tennessee

• Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Birds

• Almost all of the parks

• Roadrunners can be seen in Saguaro National Park, Arizona

Buffalo (Bison)

• Custer State Park, South Dakota

• National Bison Range, Montana

• Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming

Elk

• Icefields Parkway, Alberta

• National Elk Refuge, Jackson, Wyoming (winter only; during the rest of the year the elk go up into the mountains)

Moose

• Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming

• Icefields Parkway, Alberta

Mountain Sheep and Mountain Goats

• Going-to-the-Sun Road, Logan Pass, Glacier National Park, Montana

• Icefields Parkway, Alberta

Prairie Dogs

• Badlands National Park, South Dakota

• Devils Tower National Monument, Wyoming

Whales

• Off the Pacific coast, at various times of the year.

Recommendations Made By Visitors To This Site

Hardware Ranch is located approximately 25 miles east of Logan, Utah. A herd of elk lives on the ranch property. Occasionally moose and more frequently deer (mule deer, not those wimpy European things :) ) can be seen as well. In the winter there are sleigh rides with elk pulling the sleds. (Why not reindeer pulling sleighs? Who knows. Reindeer are much more docile than elk.)

One you may want to add is the Turnbull National Wildlife Refuge in Washington State (near Cheney). It's your typical refuge for migrating waterfowl. Spring sees tundra swans and summer may see elk grazing. Also other mammals such as black bear, coyote, porcupine and whitetail deer.
