Derivation of Name
From the Wisconsin River, the name of which is derived from an Ojibwa Indian word meaning "gathering of the waters" or "place of the beaver".
Nickname
The Badger State. The name does not refer to the animal, but to the lead miners of the 1820's who burrowed like badgers into the hillsides.
