Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia

Description

A large area of the town of Williamsburg consists of buildings preserved from Colonial times, i.e. from before the Declaration of American Independence in 1776. This area, free of motor traffic, is called Colonial Williamsburg. Williamsburg also has another, larger area of modern buildings.

It is possible to park near the preserved buildings and walk around the area on foot, entirely free of charge.

However, to enter inside the preserved buildings you must take an official tour. These depart from the Colonial Williamsburg Visitor Centre, which is located several miles from the preserved buildings. Since Colonial Williamsburg is a commercial operation, not run by the National Park Service, the official tours are somewhat expensive.

The "living history" concept is used in Colonial Williamsburg, with actors in costume playing the parts of the inhabitants of various buildings.

The Colonial National Historical Park which includes Jamestown is located near Williamsburg.
