Derivation of Name
As far as I am aware, the generally accepted theory is that the name of Virginia was derived from Queen Elizabeth I of England who was known as the Virgin Queen. However, Microsoft's Encarta also mentions another possibility that I don't think is nearly so widely known, namely that the state's name could have been derived from that of a Native American community in the area of the original colony.
