Utah State Highway 68 Through Salt Lake City, Utah

Utah State Highway 68 forms a conventional road alternative to I-15 as a north-south route through Salt Lake City. I-15 through the Salt Lake City area is currently undergoing extensive long term road works in preparation for the forthcoming Winter Olympics, making it even more unpleasant than usual. It carries high volumes of traffic at high speed, making it quite stressful. In the summer of 2000 we were amused by a large advertisement for Evanston, Wyoming on the outskirts of Salt Lake City which read: "No construction - no pollution".

US89 forms a much slower but more peaceful alternative to I-15 through Ogden.

However, US89 runs east of I-15 through the centre of Salt Lake City and is therefore probably not a good choice for that part of the journey.

Utah State Highway 68, to the west of I-15, is well worth considering provided you have sufficient time.

If you are travelling on I-15 South, in North Salt Lake take I-215 (signposted to the airport), very shortly exit to Utah State Highway 68 and head south.

If after passing through Salt Lake City you will be continuing on I-15 South towards St George and Las Vegas then you can divert back to the Interstate at one of several points south of Salt Lake City. The southernmost of these points lies just south of Utah Lake, involving taking US6 East for a short distance. This option will by-pass I-15 through Provo which is probably worthwhile.

From its northern intersection with I-215 to the southern outskirts of Salt Lake City, California State Highway 68 passes through suburbs and is not fast. There are numerous stop lights but the road proceeds without any turns so following the route is very simple.

On leaving Salt Lake City the road very quickly becomes rural and therefore much faster. The section to the west of Utah Lake could even be described as being fairly scenic.

There is little point in taking the US6/U50 diversion as far south as Holden since I-15 south of Provo generally has very little traffic and makes for very easy driving.
