Red Canyon, Utah

Location

Utah State Road 12 passes through Red Canyon, just west of Bryce Canyon National Park.

Description

Whereas at Bryce Canyon National Park you overlook the rock formations (unless you take one of the trails), at Red Canyon you drive through the rock formations and see them towering above you. The various hoodoos, eroded red sandstone columns, are particularly fascinating. Photograph (37KB).

Many visitors pass through Red Canyon on their way to Bryce Canyon. Red Canyon is well worth a few stops to admire the scenery.

There is a visitor centre, I think run by the National Forest Service, which would seem logical given that Red Canyon lies within the Dixie National Forest.

There is no entrance fee.
