Newspaper Rock, Utah
Location
Newspaper Rock is on Utah State Highway 211, which is the access road from US191 to the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park, in southeastern Utah.
There is a cut-through road through the Manti - La Sal National Forest west of Monticello from Utah 211 to Monticello. Newspaper Rock lies to the west of the intersection of this cut-through road and Utah 211.
Description
From the parking area immediately adjacent to Utah 211 there is an extremely short flat walk (no more than fifty yards, if that) to Newspaper Rock, on which are inscribed a large number of well-preserved Indian petroglyphs (examples of rock art drawings). These are observed from close up and are very clearly visible. This must be one of best collections of petroglyphs - it is most certainly the most easily accessed.
When we visited some Indians had set up tables near the parking area and were quietly offering items of jewellery for sale.
The name "Newspaper Rock" comes from the belief that the petroglyphs recorded important events. However, their meanings remain a mystery.
Maps differ in their statement of which authority has responsibility for Newspaper Rock. Some maps show it as being a Utah state park, others as being a BLM (Bureau of Land Management) site. For that reason I have included it in both the State Park and BLM index pages of this web site.
Newspaper Rock is well worth a stop if you are visiting the Needles District of Canyonlands National Park.
Entrance Fee
In the summer of 1999 there was no entrance fee for visiting Newspaper Rock.
