Beehives and Utah

Utah's official nickname is "The Beehive State" and a beehive appears on the Utah State Highway Marker Shield.

The connection seems to be due to the Mormon pioneers seeing the beehive as a symbol of hard work and industry and so adopted it. There is also a theory that the Mormons had the idea of creating a colony (hive) from which they would branch out converting (pollinating) others in order to spread their religion.

The Mormon word for Utah, Deseret, means honey bee. The name Utah comes from the Ute Indian tribe.

The original residence of Brigham Young in Salt Lake City is called Beehive House and has the beehive symbol on its top and on various objects inside.
