Abbreviations as listed in the above table are in common use. For example, PST is Pacific Standard Time and PDT is Pacific Daylight Saving Time.

Shorthand expressions are often used in trailers for television programmes. For example, a televised baseball match might be advertised as starting at "eight Eastern, five Pacific".

Unfortunately, time zone boundaries do not always follow state lines in the USA. Road atlases such as those published by Rand McNally usually have time zone boundaries marked although they can be very difficult to follow when they coincide with state lines or rivers.

Unfortunately, not all parts of the USA and Canada observe Daylight Saving Time (summer time), which makes for much confusion. Those areas which do not observe Daylight Saving Time appear to move time zones between winter and summer but this is an illusion.

Time Differences Relative To GMT For Major US And Canadian Cities

The values in the table will also be the correct difference in time between England and each city listed in each of the following circumstances:

• When winter time is in effect in England AND standard time is in effect in the USA and Canada, for all cities.

• When summer time is effect in England AND Daylight Saving Time is in effect in the USA and Canada but only for cities in those areas of the USA and Canada which observe Daylight Saving Time.

• When England is on winter time and the USA and Canada are on Daylight Saving Time.

• When England is on summer time and the USA and Canada are on standard time.

• When England is on summer time and the USA and Canada are on Daylight Saving Time, for those cities which are in areas of the USA and Canada which do not observe Daylight Saving Time.
