Dixie and Utah's Dixie
Dixie
The name Dixie is normally taken to mean the Confederate or slave states of the American South. The eleven Confederate states were Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
There are various theories to explain the name of Dixie to refer to the Confederate states:
- From the word "dix" (French for ten) printed on $10 notes by the Citizens Bank of Louisiana before the American Civil War.
- From songs sung by black slaves about "Dixie's", the name of a slaveowner (possibly fictional) who treated slaves well.
- From the Mason-Dixon Line, although as discussed on that page the status of Maryland during the American Civil War appears to be a question of some debate.
Utah's Dixie
The southwestern part of Utah is also confusingly called Dixie, or Utah's Dixie. St George and the Dixie National Forest are located in this area.
