The Appalachian Trail stretches through fourteen states from Springer Mountain near the town of Dahlonega in northern Georgia to Mount Katahdin in Baxter State Park in central Maine, running mainly along the ridge of the Appalachian Mountains. It is the longest continuous footpath in the world.
The Appalachian Trail passes through Georgia, North Carolina, Tennessee, Virginia, Maryland, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York State, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire and Maine. I suspect that the fourteenth state is probably West Virginia, since the trail skirts part of its border.
Some landmarks along the Appalachian Trail include:
Although part of the National Park System, the Appalachian Trail is maintained by thirty-four different organisations along its route.
Most people intending to hike the trail's entire length set out from its southern terminus in spring and follow the spring north.
The Appalachian Trail crosses the Newfound Gap road through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park at a parking area, allowing you to easily claim to have hiked the Appalachian Trail, if only a hundred yards of it!
