Louisiana and the Louisiana Purchase
In 1803 the USA purchased the vast majority of the land between the Mississippi River and the Rocky Mountains from France. At that time the entire region was named Louisiana in honour of King Louis XIV of France, so the event became known as the Louisiana Purchase.
See also Lewis and Clark Expedition.
Nowadays Louisiana refers only to the state of that name.
The abbreviation LA can refer either to the state of Louisiana or the city of Los Angeles, California.
