Inland Empire
"Inland Empire" is an informal name given to a number of separate areas each located some distance inland from a coast, as follows:
- Riverside and San Bernardino counties in southern California, and some areas beyond but definitely including the cities of Ontario, Riverside and San Bernardino. Some people also include Imperial Valley.
- The Piedmont area of Georgia (between the Great Smoky Mountains and the coastal plain), including the cities of Atlanta and Athens.
- The eastern part of Washington State, possibly extending into northern Idaho, northeastern Oregon, and northwestern Montana. The city of Spokane is roughly in the middle of this area.
Reader Feedback
In May-08 Cynthy Barnes of Glendora, California kindly sent me the following comments regarding the Inland Empire in California:
I live in an area (the San Gabriel Valley) just west of what is called the Inland Empire, in Southern California. Ontario is rightly in the Inland Empire, but is near the western edge. The Inland Empire is not a well-defined place, but is roughly the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties, with some of the eastern-most cities of Los Angeles County often included, such as San Dimas, Pomona, La Verne, and Claremont. But it is mostly the San Bernardino and Riverside Counties. All the towns and cities in those counties are considered part of the Inland Empire. I have never heard the Imperial Valley referred to as "the Inland Empire." It is actually a part of the Inland Empire.
