USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
If you quality, then it's always worth asking if there's a "senior discount".
Some fast food chains give special discount cards to senior citizens, which are well worth obtaining. These entitle the bearer to a cash discount, normally of 10%, on all purchases.
Some restaurant chains don't offer a cash discount to senior citizens, but instead offer special senior citizen menu items at reduced prices.
Many motel chains and independent motels offer discounts, typically of 10%, to members of the American Association Of Retired Persons (AARP). The AARP official web site details the benefits available to members, including discounts, together with other information including details of how to apply for membership. Within the USA membership costs $8 for one year or $20 for three years. Outside the USA membership costs $10 per year or $24 for three years. (These rates are correct as at Aug-99.) One membership also includes a spouse. Membership is open to anyone aged fifty or over, retired or not. I would advise anyone from outside the AARP who wishes to apply for AARP membership to do so six months or more in advance of travelling due to processing and physical mailing delays. External link checked Aug-99.
Discounts can never be combined. Therefore, taking an example, if you already receive a 10% discount by virtue of holding a Super 8 V.I.P. card then you won't receive any further discount for belonging to the AARP. On the other hand, Motel 6 are very variable regarding offering a 10% discount to non-AARP member senior citizens, whereas AARP members are guaranteed to receive the discount.
