Black Hills, South Dakota
Apart from its scenic roads, the Black Hills region of western South Dakota has a concentration of attractions of various types:
Various other commercial attractions abound in the area, but are mostly of an extremely tacky nature and best avoided.
The Native Americans regarded the Black Hills as sacred, and some of the commercial attractions now located in the area do little to enhance one's opinion of "progress" under the rule of the white man.
The road network through the Black Hills is quite complicated, and the use of a good large scale road map marking all the attractions is recommended. Such maps are easily obtainable free of charge in the area.
The best place to stay in the Black Hills area is probably Rapid City.
