John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
From Hanksville the road initially runs south-south-east, then gradually curves to approach US191 in an easterly direction.
Heading south from Hanksville the road at first crosses a wide flat arid plain with extensive views, including sight of the Henry Mountains to the west.
Further south the road runs largely through valleys, with more restricted views but often with very imposing red sandstone rock formations on one side or both sides.
The road crosses the Colorado River via an impressive bridge at Hite, near the northern end of Glen Canyon/Lake Powell. A few miles north of the bridge there is an overlook alongside the road which provides a marvellous view of the river from high above.
Nearer Blanding, a spur road from Utah 95 leads to Natural Bridges National Monument.
The road's name comes from the fact that it was completed in 1976, the bicentennial year of the USA.
