Utah State Highway 279

Location

Utah State Highway 279 runs from US191 just north of Moab roughly southwest. It is signposted as going to Potash, which might refer to a town of that name or perhaps the potash works in this area (almost certainly the large turquoise areas visible in the distance from some overlooks at Dead Horse Point State Park.

The Shafer Trail, an unpaved road suitable only for four wheel drive vehicles, runs from the end of Utah State Highway 279 in a southwesterly direction to below Dead Horse Point, then in a westerly direction climbing up to the Island In The Sky district of Canyonlands National Park, joining the main park road near the entrance.

Description

Utah State Highway 279 runs alongside the Colorado River. There is a high cliff on the same side of the river as the road, and we saw several groups of climbers making their way up and down this cliff. The land is flat on the other side of the river. Unfortunately because of a shortage of time we didn't explore this road to its end.
