USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
The road is interesting for its entire length. We felt that the most scenic area, because of the mountains, was between Cimarron and Dulce.
The highest section of the road is between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amarilla. In Apr-01 we found plenty of snow alongside the road but none on the road itself.
Parts of this road pass through the Carson National Forest.
Taos is (in our opinion) a horrible, expensive, crowded tourist trap town (another Aspen) but on this visit we did discover a very welcome McDonald's on NM68 south of the US64 intersection where somewhat surprisingly both the prices and the service were ok.
The impressive Rio Grande Bridge to the west of Taos is well worth a stop.
We thought Chama was a good little town.
Chama, New Mexico to Antonito, Colorado (NM17/Co17)
Cumbres and Toltec Scenic Railroad
Rio Grande/US64 Bridge, West of Taos (very brief mention)
