Location and Description

Ogden Canyon, Pineview Reservoir and Trapper's Loop are located in northern Utah, in the Wasatch Mountains and the Wasatch-Cache National Forest east of Ogden.

From Ogden, take the road east through the Ogden Canyon alongside the Ogden River. This road appears to be marked on maps as Utah State Highway 39 but Jim quotes it as being Utah State Highway 166 which might be an old road number. I will refer to it simply as being Highway 39 here. The road leads up to Pineview Reservoir and is signposted such.

At Pineview Reservoir there is a choice of routes back west. Most of the locals consider Trapper's Loop to be take Utah State Highway 158 north around the west shore of the reservoir to Eden, then Utah State Highway 162 north to Liberty and then west to North Ogden.

An alternative is to continue on Utah State Highway 39 east around the southern shore of the reservoir, then take Utah State Highway 167 south to Mountain Green and I-84. I-84 west takes you through Weber Canyon to South Ogden.

A third possibility is to continue on Utah State Highway 39 looping round the southeastern arm of the reservoir to Huntsville, where there is a monastery that is open most of the year. There is also a road around the northeastern side of the reservoir from Hunstville to Eden.

All these roads are very scenic and pass through areas which are of historical interest.

Jim says that there are several decent restaurants in Ogden Canyon, one of which he describes as a combination grocery/burger place that's popular with skiers. Huntsville also has some cafes, etc.

Utah State Highway 39 continues east over the mountains to Woodruff. This section of the highway is marked on maps as being closed in winter. I do not know if the western section as far as the reservoir is closed or open in winter. Jim suggests that all the mountain roads mentioned on this page may be closed in winter.

From Liberty, Utah State Highway 165 runs north to Logan but this involves a lengthy section of unpaved road over a pass.

All the other roads mentioned on this page are paved.
