USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
However, once you clear this you are left with semi-desert sage bush country, and the huge open spaces with views of distant mountains that this road passes through are magnificent. After a while, on a clear day, you begin to see what appears to be a thin horizontal band of cloud up ahead on the right. It eventually becomes apparent that it isn't cloud at all, but the snow on the tops of the Wind River Range mountains. Photograph (27KB).
Further north, especially after Pinedale, the road begins to enter the mountains and the Bridger-Teton National Forest. The final descent into Jackson twists back and forth over the Hoback River.
US191 is a long road with only a few tiny towns and very little traffic. It epitomises the emptiness and the beauty of the semi-desert areas of the American West.
