USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
From the Sacramento Valley Ca 70 quickly enters a narrow and extremely scenic gorge, through which it climbs almost all the way to Paxton. This is a reasonably fast road. I haven't explored Ca 70 east of Paxton.
At Paxton, turn north onto Ca 89. This is a good fast road through the Lassen and Plumas National Forests.
At Canyon Dam, turn right onto Ca 147 which runs alongside the eastern shore of Lake Almanor. Although marked as a backroad on some maps, it is in fact a good fast road. It is paved. There are good views of the very scenic lake in places.
At Westwood, turn east onto Ca 38. This runs over a very minor pass (Freedonyer Pass, 5748 feet) before descending somewhat into Susanville.
From Westwood, Ca 38 also runs west near the southern entrance of Lassen Volcanic National Park and down into the Sacramento Valley to join I-5 at Red Bluff.
