California State Highway 20 and Clear Lake

Location

California State Highway 20 runs from the town of Fort Bragg (on the coast some hundred miles or so north of San Francisco) east to Willets, then in combination with US101 south to a junction about six miles north of Ukiah. It then leaves US101 and runs east to Clear Lake. It crosses I-5 at Williams and continues east to Yuba City and into the Sierra Nevada Mountains to eventually meet I-80.

This page only describes the section between US101 and I-5.

Description

From US101 heading east, Ca 20 first passes the relatively small Mendocino Lake.

It then climbs up into the mountains to eventually run alongside the northern side of Clear Lake. This is a large and highly scenic lake. There are various little holiday resort towns at the lake's edge and this would be a very pleasant area to spend a quiet few days. There are also two roads on the southern side of Clear Lake - a main road some way from the lake and a minor road which from the map appears to run alongside the lake. This part of the road borders the Mendocino National Forest which lies to the north.

After leaving Clear Lake, Ca 20 winds east through the mountains and then descends into the flat farming country of the Sacramento Valley for its virtually straight run to the I-5 intersection.
