Bighorn Mountains and the Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming

Location

The Bighorn Mountains are in northeastern Wyoming.

Description

US14, US ALT14 and US16 cross the Bighorn Mountains and pass through the Bighorn National Forest. All these roads are extremely scenic.

There is a fairly steep and narrow unpaved side road that runs from the summit of US ALT14 up to a fascinating Indian medicine wheel - an Indian version of Stonehenge. There is no entrance charge. The rocks are not standing stones, just laid on the ground in the form of a spoked wheel. This is now a National Historic Site.

Additional Comments

Freddy Weinberg of Vermont kindly sent me this comment:
In the Bighorn National Forest, Wyoming, I know you put US Alt 14 west of Sheridan on your list. But US 14 just south of there is also excellent.
