USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Safety Considerations for a US/Canadian Holiday - Personal Security Risk Level

In our experience outside of the big cities you are very unlikely to encounter problems with regard to personal security.

For example, although we certainly would not recommend doing so yourself we have often seen cars parked outside supermarkets in small towns in both the USA and Canada with their windows down and the keys left in the ignition.

No doubt there are areas of big cities where without local knowledge you could encounter serious trouble, but in small towns and out in the country the risk level is very low. You sometimes see people, presumably unemployed, "hanging around" but unlike in Britain you don't encounter beggars and drunks in the USA or Canada, at least in small and medium sized towns.

The following news story appeared on Ceefax, BBC's teletext service, on 11-Oct-98:

Britain is becoming a more dangerous place to live than America, according to a United States Government report. UK Home Secretary Jack Straw is studying the findings, submitted by the US Department of Justice last month. Figures suggest robbery, burglary and assaults are more common per person in England and Wales than in the US. The report shows a larger proportion of accused offenders are convicted in the US and sentences in the US are much longer.
The following item appeared in the 19-Jul-99 edition of the Daily Brief:
The [U.S.] Justice Department reports that violent crime rates in the U.S. fell 7% last year to the lowest level in 26 years. Crimes against property fell 12% last year to the lowest level since 1973.
The following item appeared in the 18-Oct-99 edition of the Daily Brief:
The FBI reports that there were 16,914 murders in the US last year. The rate - six murders per 100,000 people - was the lowest since 1967.
