Safety Considerations for a US/Canadian Holiday - Flash Floods

Some parts of the USA, especially in the west, are liable to flash floods. During and after heavy rainfall previously dried up riverbeds may become torrents of water.

Where roads cross such riverbeds there are usually prominent warning signs telling you not to stop there and not to enter when it is raining or when water is present.

Any similar dangers on walking trails in National Parks and similar areas will usually be clearly marked.

The Narrows Trail in Zion National Park in Utah is liable to flash floods of the Virgin River after heavy rainfall. There is a large sign at the start of the trail indicating the current danger level. The danger only applies to the section of the trail where you have to wade in the river; up to that point there is no danger.
