John Cletheroe's
USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
In the event of a fire then use stairs, not lifts (elevators). If you are caught in a lift and the light fails but the lift is otherwise still operative, it may help to know that the button for the exit floor (normally the ground floor) often has an embossed asterisk beside its number, mainly intended to assist blind people (I haven't seen this information in writing but it appears to be the case).
Feel the surface of a door to check whether it is safe to open it.
If your room exit is blocked then fill the bath with water and place wet towels at the bottom of the door to prevent smoke entering.
