Restaurant Prices in the USA and Canada
Introduction
The prices given on this page are only meant as a very rough guide. Prices for non-chain restaurants, diners and cafes are similar to corresponding chain establishments. Many restaurants have special meals for young children. Many restaurant chains offer discounts or special menu items for senior citizens.
These prices are for the USA. Prices in Canada are higher in terms of dollars and cents but similar in real terms after allowing for the different exchange rate.
These prices are as at summer 2000.
Breakfast
Many motels supply a simple continental breakfast (coffee, toast, donuts, etc) free of charge to guests.
Fast food (Burger King, Carl's Jr, Hardee's, McDonald's, Sonic, etc): $2 per person.
Family restaurants (Denny's, etc): $3 to $6 per person.
Lunch
Supermarkets are an excellent source of items for mid-day picnics.
Fast food (Burger King, Carl's Jr, Dairy Queen, Hardee's McDonald's, Sonic, Subway, Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc): $4 per person.
Family restaurants (Denny's, Pizza Hut, etc): $5 to $8 per person.
Dinner
Fast food (Burger King, Carl's Jr, Dairy Queen, Hardee's McDonald's, Sonic, Subway, Taco Bell, Wendy's, etc): $4 per person.
Buffet restaurants (Kings Table, Royal Fork, North's Chuck Wagon, etc): $5 to $8 per person.
Family restaurants (Denny's, JB's, Pizza Hut, etc) and family steak houses (Golden Corral, Ryan's, Ponderosa, Bonanza, Sizzler, etc): $6 to $10 per person.
"Fine Dining" (licensed): much more expensive.
Big Mac Price
In the summer of 1999 the price in the USA of that universal world-wide measure of the cost of living and inflation, the Big Mac, was US$2.28. This is the price for the sandwich alone, not a meal.
