Fast Food Restaurants in the USA and Canada - McDonald's

Introduction

This is NOT the official McDonald's web site.

This page describes typical restaurants in the chain. Individual locations may differ.

Only a small sample of menu items are listed here.

Unless otherwise stated, prices exclude sales tax and are normal (not special offer) prices.

Area

Throughout the USA and Canada.

Normal System

Fast food.

Queue at the counter (multiple queues).

Place order and make payment.

Wait for all items to be served.

Hot food is normally not cooked to order but taken from racks on which it is kept warm.

You are normally not given a receipt.

Place your rubbish in the bin provided and leave the tray on top.

Almost all locations also have drive-throughs.

Alternative System

Queue at the counter (one queue).

Place order and make payment. Receive receipt with order number.

Wait at the order pickup point on the end of the counter until your order is ready.

Otherwise as the normal system.

This alternative system was used at some locations in the summer of 2000 but by April 2001 it appeared to have been withdrawn, due to it not leading to any improvement in service times.

Breakfasts

Served at all locations until 10:30am Mondays to Saturdays and 11:30am on Sundays.

Big Breakfast (sausage meat, scrambled egg, hash browns, muffin and jam). This is the usually the best value for money provided you have sufficient appetite.

Egg McMuffin (a muffin cut in half with a filling of poached egg, ham and cheese)

Egg McMuffin Meal (muffin, hash browns and coffee) plus Sausage Biscuit plus Sausage Biscuit With Egg - total $6.14 including tax (Camp Verde, Arizona, Apr-01)

Sausage McMuffin with Egg (similar to an Egg McMuffin but with a layer of sausage instead of ham). In Apr-2001 some McDonald's locations had an excellent special offer of two Sausage McMuffin with Eggs for $2.22.

Biscuits with a variety of fillings.

Sausage And Egg Biscuit about $1.40 (summer 2000)

Three sausage biscuits with egg $6.50 including sales tax (Casa Grande, Arizona, Apr-01)

Hotcakes with maple syrup

Breakfast Burrito with a filling of diced cheese, egg, etc. Around $1 (summer 2000).

Large coffee with endless free refills $1.10

In the summer of 2000 McDonald's started to offer bagels (with a choice of fillings) for breakfast.

Senior Discounts

In theory all locations offer a "Senior coffee" at a low price. However, many of the staff are unaware of this. If you encounter any problems, ask for the manager.

Opinion

Quality of food - consistently excellent.

Value for money - generally good, especially special offers.

Cleanliness - generally good.

Quality and speed of service - often poor.

Update

According to an article in USA Today 13-Sep-02, in response to static sales Burger King and McDonald's are introducing 99-cent value menus, a move made by Taco Bell and Wendy's over ten years ago. This may be accompanied by a corresponding reduction in the number of short term discount promotions. McDonald's value menu will feature burgers, a fruit and yogurt parfait, fries and soft drinks.
