Ambiguous Place Names In The USA And Canada
Introduction
This list includes towns and cities with the same and similar names, plus some other place names where there is a possibility for misunderstanding. With some exceptions, I have tried to restrict the towns and cities listed on this page to large or well-known places which share names, or have very similar names, within the USA and Canada. There are umpteen examples of small towns in the USA and Canada sharing the same name, in many cases even within the same state or province, although hardly ever within the same county as far as I know. In addition, many towns share names with their "originals" in Europe, sometimes with the prefix "New".
Acadia
- The historical region of Acadia in eastern Canada.
- Acadia National Park, Maine.
Alabama
- The state of Alabama.
- The Alabama River.
Algonquin
Despite its size, importance and fame, Algonquin is a provincial park, not a national park. It lies in the Canadian province of Ontario.
Arkansas
- The state of Arkansas.
- The Arkansas River.
Augusta
- Augusta, Georgia, famous for the nearby golf course which hosts the annual US Masters.
- Augusta, Maine, the state capital.
Baja California
Baja California does not lie within either California or the USA. It is part of Mexico. Baja California is the lengthy peninsula which runs south from southwestern California, almost completely separated from the rest of Mexico by the Gulf of California. The Gulf of California was previously called the Sea of Cortes.
Baja California is also sometimes known as Lower California.
Big Bend
Buffalo
- Buffalo, New York State - a large city south of Niagara Falls.
- Buffalo, Wyoming - a medium sized town south of Sheridan, near the Big Horn Mountains.
- Technically, a buffalo (the animal) should really be called a bison.
CA
- CA is the official abbreviation for the American state of California and this is its normal meaning.
- In Internet domain names, ".CA" (or more properly ".ca") is used to mean the country of Canada. This meaning is rare outside of the Internet but it is sometimes used.
California
See Baja California.
Canada and La Cañada Flintridge
They're not likely to be confused, but as well as the country of Canada there's a town on the northern outskirts of Los Angeles, California called La Cañada Flintridge (because of the tilde (~) over the n it should be pronounced "Canyada").
Cañada (with a tilde) is a Spanish word. However, it is not listed in my Spanish-English dictionary. The name of the country of Canada, without a tilde, is not Spanish - it comes from the Iroquioan Indian word "kanata" meaning "village" or "community".
Wakefield Carter of Los Angeles kindly sent me the following information:
The official full name of the town is La Cañada Flintridge. It is also the home of Descanso Gardens (www.descanso.com).
My thanks also to G. Martinez of Montrose, California who sent me this comment:
The word "Cañada" in La Cañada Flintridge means a "dell". No, it's not a computer, but rather a small isolated valley where the city is located.
Canadian River
The Canadian River flows through New Mexico, northern Texas and Oklahoma, not through Canada.
Carlsbad
- Carlsbad, California. On the coast between San Diego and Los Angeles.
- Carlsbad, New Mexico. Southeastern New Mexico, close to the border with Texas. Carlsbad Caverns National Park is about 25 miles southwest of the town.

- Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area. Not in the state of Delaware but part of the border between New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Its name comes from the Delaware River.

- Laramie is by far the larger town. It lies on I-80 to the west of Cheyenne.
The two towns are about 83 miles apart as the crow flies or about 102 miles by road, although this direct route involves use of some minor backroads which may be unpaved and unsignposted. The distance via I-80, I-25 and US26 is 158 miles.

None of these should to be confused with nachos.
National Parks, National Monuments, National Recreation Areas, National Forests, State Parks, Provincial Parks, etc
Since these different types of areas tend to offer different features and have different entrance fee policies it is well worth trying to be precise about their names. In a few cases areas with very similar names, such as a National Park and a National Forest, lie close to one another and could be easily confused.
See also Government Agencies And Departments Responsible For Recreation Areas.
New England
New England isn't the name of an American state or a Canadian province. It's the informal name of a region, usually taken to include the American states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Some British holiday company brochures wrongly include part or the whole of New York State in New England.

New Mexico is an ordinary American state, just like Arizona, Colorado, Texas and so on. New Mexico is part of the United States of America. It is not a separate country, nor is it part of the country of Mexico.

Springfield

- Springfield, Massachusetts.
- Springfield, Missouri.
- There are towns called Springfield in several other states. The popularity of the name probably explains why a fictional Springfield in an unspecified American state was chosen as the setting for "The Simpsons" cartoon series.

There is a theoretical possibility of confusing St Petersburg, Florida with St Petersburg in Russia (previously called Leningrad).
Mark Twain used the real town of Hannibal, Missouri as a model for the fictional town of St Petersburg in his Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stories.
