Ambiguous Place Names In The USA And Canada

Introduction

This list includes towns and cities with the same and similar names, plus some other place names where there is a possibility for misunderstanding. With some exceptions, I have tried to restrict the towns and cities listed on this page to large or well-known places which share names, or have very similar names, within the USA and Canada. There are umpteen examples of small towns in the USA and Canada sharing the same name, in many cases even within the same state or province, although hardly ever within the same county as far as I know. In addition, many towns share names with their "originals" in Europe, sometimes with the prefix "New".

Acadia

Alabama

Algonquin

Despite its size, importance and fame, Algonquin is a provincial park, not a national park. It lies in the Canadian province of Ontario.

Arkansas

Augusta

Baja California

Baja California does not lie within either California or the USA. It is part of Mexico. Baja California is the lengthy peninsula which runs south from southwestern California, almost completely separated from the rest of Mexico by the Gulf of California. The Gulf of California was previously called the Sea of Cortes.

Baja California is also sometimes known as Lower California.

Big Bend

Buffalo

CA

California

See Baja California.

Canada and La Cañada Flintridge

They're not likely to be confused, but as well as the country of Canada there's a town on the northern outskirts of Los Angeles, California called La Cañada Flintridge (because of the tilde (~) over the n it should be pronounced "Canyada").

Cañada (with a tilde) is a Spanish word. However, it is not listed in my Spanish-English dictionary. The name of the country of Canada, without a tilde, is not Spanish - it comes from the Iroquioan Indian word "kanata" meaning "village" or "community".

Wakefield Carter of Los Angeles kindly sent me the following information:

The official full name of the town is La Cañada Flintridge. It is also the home of Descanso Gardens (www.descanso.com).
My thanks also to G. Martinez of Montrose, California who sent me this comment:
The word "Cañada" in La Cañada Flintridge means a "dell". No, it's not a computer, but rather a small isolated valley where the city is located.

Canadian River

The Canadian River flows through New Mexico, northern Texas and Oklahoma, not through Canada.

Carlsbad

Charleston

Chimney Rock

City Of Rocks

Colorado

Columbia

Concord

The distance between Concord, Massachusetts and Concord, New Hampshire is only about 52 miles as the crow flies or about 57 miles by road, making it easy to confuse the two.

Connecticut

Dallas and Dulles

Delaware

Dixie

El Camino Real (The Royal Road, or The King's Highway)

See the Historic And Named Trails And Roads page.

El Capitan

Eureka and Yreka, California

The two towns are just over 100 miles apart as the crow flies. By road the distance is about 200 miles.

Fort Laramie and Laramie, Wyoming

The two towns are about 83 miles apart as the crow flies or about 102 miles by road, although this direct route involves use of some minor backroads which may be unpaved and unsignposted. The distance via I-80, I-25 and US26 is 158 miles.

Georgia

Glacier National Park

Golden

Goosenecks

See Utah's Goosenecks.

Grand Canyon

Hudson Bay and Hudson River

To the best of my knowledge Hudson Bay and the Hudson River are not connected by any inland waterways.

Illinois

Inspiration Point

Quite a number of the National Parks in the USA have a particularly impressive and beautiful lookout spot called Inspiration Point.

Iowa

Jackson

Kansas

Kentucky

LA

Labrador

Labrador is not a separate Canadian province but part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

Las Vegas

Logan

Louisiana

Lower California

Lower California is another name for Baja California.

Mammoth...

Michigan

Manitoba

Minnesota

Mississippi

Missouri

Mount Desert Island, Acadia National Park, Maine

Despite the name, this is not on a desert island.

Natchez

None of these should to be confused with nachos.

National Parks, National Monuments, National Recreation Areas, National Forests, State Parks, Provincial Parks, etc

Since these different types of areas tend to offer different features and have different entrance fee policies it is well worth trying to be precise about their names. In a few cases areas with very similar names, such as a National Park and a National Forest, lie close to one another and could be easily confused.

See also Government Agencies And Departments Responsible For Recreation Areas.

New England

New England isn't the name of an American state or a Canadian province. It's the informal name of a region, usually taken to include the American states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island. Some British holiday company brochures wrongly include part or the whole of New York State in New England.

New Mexico

New Mexico is an ordinary American state, just like Arizona, Colorado, Texas and so on. New Mexico is part of the United States of America. It is not a separate country, nor is it part of the country of Mexico.

New York

Northwest Territory and Northwest Territories

See Northwest Territory and Northwest Territories.

Ohio

Oneida and Oneonta

Ontario

Portland

Prince Edward

Québec

Red...

Saguaro National Park and Sequoia National Park

These two National Parks with similar sounding names can be confused.

Saint John and St John's

Salem

Salem, Massachusetts and Salem, New Hampshire are only about 25 miles apart as the crow flies or about 27 miles by road, making it very easy to confuse the two.

There are towns called Salem in several other states, including no less than seven in Texas alone.

San Francisco Mountains

San Juan

Saskatchewan

Skyline Drive

Springfield

St Petersburg

There is a theoretical possibility of confusing St Petersburg, Florida with St Petersburg in Russia (previously called Leningrad).

Mark Twain used the real town of Hannibal, Missouri as a model for the fictional town of St Petersburg in his Tom Sawyer and Huckleberry Finn stories.

State Park Names

Quite a number of state parks have very similar names to National Parks, National Monuments, National Forests, state parks in other states, etc.

Tennessee

Tejon And Teton

Thousand Islands, Ten Thousand Islands and Thirty Thousand Islands

Trace

Vancouver

Washington

Waynesboro and Waynesville

West Point

West Virginia

White...

Lake Winnipeg and Lake Winnipegosis

These two large lakes in the southern half of Manitoba run very roughly parallel to each other in a very approximately north-south direction. Lake Winnipeg is the more easterly and the larger of the two.

Wisconsin

Wyoming

Yellowstone National Park and Yosemite National Park

Yukon
