US And Canadian Emergency Services Telephone Number

IN THE USA AND CANADA, TO CONTACT THE EMERGENCY SERVICES (FIRE, POLICE OR AMBULANCE) DIAL 911

This number must only be used in an emergency.

If you are visiting the USA or Canada from a country which uses a different number for emergencies, then make sure that everyone in your party knows this number.

A prefix may be required to dial this number from a motel room or within an office building, etc. If in any doubt then contact reception which is usually done by dialling 0. Motel room phones almost always have instructions for obtaining outside lines and for contacting reception.

In some US cities the telephone number 311 can be used to contact the police for non-emergency purposes. In some US cities the same number can be used to contact the city authorities to report problems such as faulty street lights and potholes in the road.
