Using A Phone From A Motel Room

For a visitor from another country, using a phone in a US or Canadian motel room can be a somewhat challenging experience.

As an example, the following are the instructions posted on the phones at most Motel 6's. These instructions are typical, if perhaps somewhat clearer and more complete than those provided at most motels. These instructions most definitely do NOT apply generally, not even at all Motel 6's. Always refer to the instructions on the phone.

Instruction On Phone Comment
Long Distance - 9 + 0 + area code + number (credit card, billed to a third number or collect only) "Collect" means reverse charges - the recipient of the call pays for it
Long Distance Operator - 9 + 00
800 Calls - 9 + 1 + 800 + number 800 calls are toll free; presumably this includes 877 and 888 calls which are also toll free

No service charge on long distance calls
