Florence, Oregon

Location

The town of Florence is on the central part of the Oregon Coast, at the junction of US101 and Oregon State Highway 126 (which runs east to cross I-5 at Eugene).

Description

Florence is a pleasant town with all the normal facilities such as motels, shops and restaurants. It is a good choice for a lunchtime or overnight stop.

The main part of the town, where the shops and restaurants are to be found, lies on US101 north of the bridge over the Siuslaw River. There are several motels on US101 south of this bridge. We found very different rates at similar-looking motels here, so it is worth searching around.

While it is possible to drive out to the ocean at Florence, this is not straightforward and there is no "front" along the beach. Two quite lengthy roads lead out to jetties north and south of the Siuslaw River where it flows into the Pacific. We explored the northern road, but felt that it was hardly worth the effort. There is access to the beach from the parking area at the end of the northern road but it is awkward, across dunes. We weren't encouraged by the sign warning that this is a high crime area. We didn't explore the southern road. Better views of the ocean are to be had from US101 outside town.
