Astoria Column, Astoria, Oregon

Location

The town of Astoria is located on the southern bank of the Columbia River, very close to where it meets the Pacific Ocean.

The Astoria Column is at the top of the hill which overlooks the town.

From the southern end of the Astoria Bridge, take the main highway east a few blocks. In the middle of town, turn south up the hill. The route to the column is clearly marked by drawings of it stencilled onto the road surface.

Description

A magnificent view of the town, the Columbia River, the Astoria Bridge and the surrounding area can be had, even from the base of the column.

For those with sufficient courage and stamina, a spiral staircase with 164 steps leads up inside the column to a platform at its top. The column is 125 feet high.

The column was built in 1926 as a monument to the historical events of the region. It was refurbished in 1995.

Free entrance and car parking.
