USA and Canada Holiday Hints |
The Algoma Central Railway runs north from Sault Ste Marie, Ontario for three hundred miles to Hearst.
Various trips are possible, the most well-known of which is the day trip of 114 miles in each direction from Sault Ste Marie to Agawa Canyon and back. This excursion is very popular and reported to be highly scenic. It is said to attract over 100,000 visitors each year. Tours run daily from early June to mid-October, departing at 8am. There is a two hour stop at the Canyon, where there are waterfalls, seven hundred feet high rocky cliffs, nature trails and a lookout point set in a natural park beside the Agawa River. I haven't taken this trip but if anyone would care to offer a more detailed description then I'd be delighted to include it on this page. As far as I can discover by looking at the map, there is no road access to Agawa Canyon. Agawa Canyon is not a National or Provincial park.
It is also possible to travel on the railway all the way to Hearst, stay in Hearst as many nights as desired, then return to Sault Ste Marie. The journey from Sault Ste Marie to Hearst or vice-versa takes a full day. This service operates year-round but only on certain days of the week.
On Saturdays and Sundays only from January to mid-March a one day "Snow Train" excursion is available from Sault Ste Marie to Agawa Canyon, but without a stop at the Canyon (due to the weather conditions).
The railway station in Sault Ste Marie is located near the lake shore.
The Algoma Central Railway has been owned by the Wisconsin Central Railroad since 1995 but its passenger operations retain the Algoma Central name.
