Adirondack Mountains and Adirondack Park, New York State

The scenic Adirondack Mountains are in northeastern New York State.

Because of their location the Adirondacks might be thought to be part of the Appalachian chain. This is not the case however; geologically the Adirondacks are in fact a southern extension of the Canadian Shield.

The Adirondack Park covers a huge area of northeastern New York State. Encarta 95 quotes the area of the park as being 806,250 square miles which cannot possibly be correct since the area of the whole of New York State is only 54,475 square miles; assuming the decimal point is in the wrong place a figure of 8,062 square miles seems much more likely. Another source quotes a figure of 9,375 square miles which also seems reasonable. For comparison, the size of Wales is 8,018 square miles. The Adirondack Park is the largest area of wilderness in the USA to the east of the Mississippi River. As with other enormous parks such as Yellowstone, this park deserves a fair amount of time to fully explore. There are no large towns within the park but there are a number of resorts, notably Saranac Lake. As well as the mountains (highest peak 5344 feet) the park also has a large number of lakes and rivers and is highly forested throughout.
