United States National Wildlife Refuges - Introduction

National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) can be found throughout many areas of the USA. They are of various sizes, and are home to many different species of animals and birds.

According to an item in USA Today 10-Feb-03, President Theodore Roosevelt started the National Wildlife Refuge system in 1903 with the 3 acre Pelican Island Bird Reservation in Florida and the system now has more than 530 refuges with a total of over 95 million acres.

The National Wildlife Refuges are administered by the Fish And Wildlife Service, a division of the United States Department Of The Interior.

Many of the National Parks, other National Park Service areas, National Forests and State Parks are also major havens for wildlife.
