Roswell, New Mexico

Location

Southeastern New Mexico, north of Carlsbad, at the junction of US70, US285 and US380.

Description

Roswell is a medium sized town with a good range of motels and restaurants and is recommended. Although a slightly larger town than Carlsbad, we preferred it. However, it is 76 miles north of Carlsbad - a factor to definitely bear in mind if you are visiting Carlsbad Caverns and Guadalupe Mountains National Parks.

Roswell's claim to fame as the UFO capital of the USA is given a fairly low-key treatment in the town. There is a UFO museum in the middle of town and a few of the shops have UFO stickers on their windows. Apart from that there is little mention. Don't be put off Roswell by the UFO connection.

Trivia

We found the Farmer's Country Market a good source for fruit. They have several locations in Roswell.

Carlsbad Caverns National Park
Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Texas
Lincoln National Forest
Sitting Bull Falls, on New Mexico State Highway 137, is reported as being worth a visit although we haven't been there ourselves. It is a National Forest area with a day-use fee of $5 per vehicle.
