Derivation of Name
The region north of Mexico was named Nuevo Mexico, Spanish for "New Mexico", by a Spanish explorer in the 1560's. Jim Pernikoff kindly EMailed me this comments regarding the derivation of the name "Mexico":
Mexico sounds like it is derived from the Aztec, and that seems to be the case. It seems the Aztecs had a large city, called Metz-xih-co, meaning "in the centre of the waters of the moon", on an island in a lake.
