Labrador

Labrador is not a separate Canadian province.

According to one definition Labrador forms the mainland part of the province of Newfoundland and Labrador.

However, according to a different source Labrador covers the whole of the peninsula east of Hudson Bay, including the northern part of the Province of Québec. This definition would include Ungava as part of Labrador.

Jim Pernikoff kindly EMailed me with the following comment:

The origin of the word "Labrador" is uncertain but it seems the area was referred to by a Portuguese explorer as "Terra de Lavradores", meaning Land of Ploughmen, i.e. slaves. There are other theories as to its derivation, however.
