USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Kootenay National Park, British Columbia

Location

Kootenay National Park is situated along the southern part of the main range of the Canadian Rockies, just west of the British Columbia/Alberta border.

Size

543 square miles. For comparison, the area of the English county of Berkshire is 485 square miles.

What to See and Do

The drive along Road 93 is the main attraction of this park.

From Radium Hot Springs the road initially heads east alongside Sinclair Creek. Sinclair Canyon, only a mile from Radium Hot Springs, is well worth a short stop.

After the very easy Sinclair Pass (with good views over the valley) the road descends to run alongside the Kootenay River. A picnic stop here is recommended.

Later the road runs alongside the Vermillion River and then traverses the very easy Vermillion Pass, where it enters Banff National Park.

Some Ideas for Places to Stay

Entrance Fee

In the summer of 2000 the entrance fee for normal cars was $10 per day. This gives entrance for the vehicles' driver and all passengers and covers up to 4pm on the following day. This one entrance fee gives access to Banff, Kootenay, Jasper and Yoho National Parks within the time period. There is a $2 reduction for senior citizens. For a more extended period a very much more expensive pass is available.
