USA and Canada Holiday Hints

Jasper National Park, Alberta

Location

Jasper National Park is situated along the northern part of the main range of the Canadian Rockies, just east of the British Columbia/Alberta border, south of the town of Jasper, north of Banff National Park.

Size

4,200 square miles. For comparison, the size of the English county of North Yorkshire is 3,213 square miles.

What to See and Do

Three of Jasper National Park's most spectacular features are Maligne Lake, Athabasca Falls and Sunwapta Falls.

To get to Maligne Lake from the town of Jasper, drive east on Highway 16 in the direction of Hinton for a few miles, then take the Maligne Canyon and Maligne Lake road which runs south. Maligne Lake is at the end of the road, about thirty miles from the town of Jasper.

Athabasca Falls lies about twenty miles south of the town of Jasper, on the spectacular Icefields Parkway which runs between Jasper and Banff. As well as the falls, the adjacent lake which supplies them with water is also very scenic.

Sunwapta Falls lie about 35 miles south of the town of Jasper, on the Icefields Parkway.

Entrance Fee

In the summer of 2000 the entrance fee for normal cars was $10 per day. This gives entrance for the vehicles' driver and all passengers and covers up to 4pm on the following day. This one entrance fee gives access to Banff, Kootenay, Jasper and Yoho National Parks within the time period. There is a $2 reduction for senior citizens. For a more extended period a very much more expensive pass is available.
