Wupatki National Monument, Arizona
Location
Northern Arizona, northeast of Flagstaff. From Flagstaff take US89 north towards Cameron. About fifteen miles north of Flagstaff turn east on Arizona State Highway 395 and pass through Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. Highway 395, which is scenic, then bends round north and runs through Wupatki National Monument before rejoining US89. Alternatively take the northern junction from US89 onto Highway 395 and proceed in the opposite direction.
Size
55 square miles. For comparison, the area of the Isle of Wight off the south coast of England is 147 square miles.
What to See and Do
Highway 395 passes by five preserved pueblo ruins, dating from the eleventh and twelfth centuries, which are accessible to the public. In most cases a short and fairly level trail leads to each ruin. Most of these ruins can be entered.
Some of the ruins are larger than others, some are high on exposed hills and others lie in more protected areas. Each ruin is unique, with its own style, atmosphere and interest.
The area is highly scenic, with huge sweeping vistas.
Entrance Fee
$3 per person (Apr-01). This also covers entrance to nearby Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument.
