Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument, Arizona

Location

Northern Arizona, northeast of Flagstaff. From Flagstaff take US89 north towards Cameron. About fifteen miles north of Flagstaff turn east on Arizona State Highway 395. Highway 395, which is very scenic, bends round north and runs through Wupatki National Monument before rejoining US89.

Size

4.7 square miles.

What to See and Do

Sunset Crater is an extinct volcanic cinder cone, about a thousand feet high. It last erupted around 1065AD. Its name comes from the colour of the rocks at its summit.

The Lava Flow Trail is a fairly short, paved, virtually flat trail which is well worth taking. Signs along the way explain the geology, vegetation and history of the area. There is also a longer, unpaved trail in the same area.

Entrance Fee

$3 per person (Apr-01). This also covers entrance to nearby Wupatki National Monument.
