Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Michigan
Location
Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore is on the northern (Lake Superior) side of Michigan's Upper Peninsular, between Munising and Grand Marais.
Description
The main features of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore are the various fascinating rock formations along the shore. These can only be properly observed by means of a boat trip and such boat trips can be had from Munising.
On land, Miners Falls near Munising is worth a visit. The same road continues north to the shore where Miners Castle, one of the rock formations, can be seen. This road is paved.
A road heads northeast from Munising towards Grand Marais, but for a considerable part of the way this is a poor quality narrow unpaved road. In places you have to drive on sand. Before deciding to take this road remember that most car rental companies have a clause in their rental agreements which prohibits driving on unpaved road, and in any case allow plenty of time because progress is slow. There isn't a great deal to be seen from this road.
In the Area
- Tahquamenon Falls State Park
- Grand Sable Dunes (near Grand Marais) are worth a look.
- Grand Marais is a quiet little town with a scenic harbour.
