Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona

Location

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument lies in the Sonoran Desert in the very south of Arizona, adjacent to the Mexico border, near the town of Why.

Description

The road from Gila Bend to Tucson via Ajo, Why and Sells is a good quality scenic drive. From Why a road heads south to Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument.

Unfortunately accommodation in Ajo and Why is very limited and we found it generally rather expensive.

The main cactus area in the National Monument can only be accessed via an unpaved road.

Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument has an area of 517 square miles. For comparison, the size of the English county of Berkshire is 485 square miles.

Saguaro National Park near Tucson provides a rather more accessible place to view giant cacti.

Additional Comments

Freddy Weinberg of Vermont kindly sent me this comment:
Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument is as excellent as Saguaro National Park.
