Gila Cliff Dwellings National Monument, New Mexico

Location

Southwestern New Mexico, north of Silver City, New Mexico. From Silver City take NM15, which is not well signposted and at first looks a most unpromising road. NM15 is a paved road but it is narrow, with numerous curves and some fairly steep gradients, so progress is slow. It is however a very pleasant drive through the Gila National Forest. For a change you can return via NM35.

What to See and Do

Hike up to the cliff dwellings, which are situated in a cave under the lip of the canyon. The hike up is relatively strenuous. You can then walk through the actual dwellings.

Some Ideas for Places to Stay

Of the three nearby towns, Deming is recommended. Lordsburg is also acceptable, but Silver City is rather a high-priced tourist town.
