Fort Laramie National Historic Site, Wyoming

Location

Fort Laramie National Historic Site is situated well to the northeast of the town of Laramie, near the small town of Fort Laramie, on US26, not all that far from the town of Torrington, Wyoming.

Although the towns of Fort Laramie and Laramie are both in southeastern Wyoming, they are a considerable distance from each other, about 83 miles apart as the crow flies or about 102 miles by road, although this direct route involves use of some minor backroads which may be unpaved and unsignposted. The distance via I-80, I-25 and US26 is 158 miles.

What to See and Do

Fort Laramie is not a wooden stockade as you might imagine from the very misleading depiction of it in many western films and television series, but in fact it consists of a series of separate buildings set around a large open parade ground.

Besides the buildings themselves, this National Monument also features (in the summer months) "living history" - National Parks employees dressed up and playing the roles of the various everyday people who lived at the Fort in its heyday as an important stopping point on the Oregon Trail and later during the Indian Wars. This, like most things in the National Parks, is done extremely well.
