Chimney Rock National Historic Site, Nebraska

Location

Chimney Rock National Historic Site is in western Nebraska, on Chimney Rock Road, one and half miles south of Nebraska State Highway 92 near its junction with US26, about 20 miles southeast of Scottsbluff, on the south bank of the North Platte River.

Description

Chimney Rock was an important landmark on the Oregon Trail. It is an isolated spire of rock which can be seen for many miles. It marked the first indication to travellers on the trail that their long trek across the plains was drawing to an end and that the Rocky Mountains lay ahead.

The visitor centre includes a museum explaining the significance of Chimney Rock to immigrants on the Oregon Trail. There is an entrance fee of $1 per person for the visitor centre.
