Manti - La Sal National Forest and the La Sal Mountains, Utah

Location

The Manti - La Sal National Forest covers several separate mountainous areas of southern Utah.

One section of the National Forest, east of Moab, covers slopes of the La Sal Mountains.

Another section covers the mountain range which lies to the west of Monticello.

There is at least one other section of the National Forest, southeast of Provo.

Description

We have only explored the perimeter of the section east of Moab - see Utah State Road 128 for details.

From Monticello, a backroad (paved, but not marked on some maps) climbs west up into the National Forest. This road starts from US191 in the town of Monticello, two or three blocks south of its intersection with US666; there is a signpost but it isn't very obvious. In the mountains, there is an obvious signpost to the paved road which leads north to Utah 211, the access road from US191 to the Needles Section of Canyonlands National Park. This road meets Utah 211 east of Newspaper Rock. These two mountain roads provide a refreshing but rather slower alternative to US191.

We haven't explored the section of the Manti - La Sal National Forest which lies to the southeast of Provo.
